The Sheet Cake is a project of the American Film Institute Directing Workshop for Women. This is a program of intensive training for women who are already active in the business who wish to make a transition into film directing, culminating in the completion of a short (approximately 30 minute) film. The Sheet Cake centered on one day in the lives of a Virginia farm family. While the action is set in the 1950's, the setting appears much earlier,
because Miss Lucy prefers the old ways. The film was shot on the Disney Ranch north of Los Angeles. Two houses were used -- one for the interior and one for the interior -- along with a barn and a shed. The settings were extensively redressed, including some repainting for aesthetic reasons and some for continuity between the two sets. The film is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere at AFI this Summer, after which it will be submitted for festivals.
